We have grown from a small gesture of goodwill to an organisation already able to make a real impact on children’s lives. Action for Orphans was set up within days of the tragic events that unfolded without warning on 26th December 2003 in southeast Iran. On that day, the ancient city of Bam was almost entirely destroyed by a huge earthquake that killed an estimated 41,000 people. Seventy-five thousand were left homeless and 3,000 children were orphaned. Although a third of these were later placed with a surviving family member, the fate of those who had lost their entire families, homes and communities was bleak. Recognising their vulnerability and hopelessness, Action For Orphans was rapidly formed and began work on helping these children.
